Local residents donate funds to support this year's Charitable Ball
Updated On: May 06, 2017

March 14, 2016, Burnaby, BC – Less than 24 hours after Burnaby Now broke the news that Mayor Derek Corrigan’s office cancelled this year’s City contribution of $3,000.00 towards the Burnaby Firefighters Annual Charitable Ball, some local residents stepped up to donate the $3,000.00 necessary to purchase flowers and other provisions in the City’s stead.

The Burnaby Firefighters Annual Charitable Ball raises approximately $75,000 annually to help support their nutritional snack program for children at local schools.

Rob Lamoureux, President of the International Association of Firefighters Local 323, says he was very pleased to accept this donation from local concerned citizens. Mr. Lamoureux relayed that the donors were surprised and disappointed that Mr. Corrigan had withdrawn City funding for such an important cause. “They told me children should not be caught in the middle of City labour negotiations. Everyone should support the Burnaby Firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way every day in the service of the people of this City. When they’re not serving the community in their professional role they are out in the community volunteering for many worthwhile local charities.”

The 2016 Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Ball will be held on Saturday April 16th, 2016.
